THE ARTIST CORNER

NOLI PRINCIPE MANALANG

It is rare to find a successful person whose fuel for achievement is to be a man for others. Noli Manalang, an accomplished visual artist at a young age, has found his niche by turning his God-given gift of art into an instrument to touch the lives of others. He can easily live a life of comfort and ease for the amount he receives from his rich collectors and numerous art galleries wanting his artworks, but instead of basking in the glory of fame and fortune, Noli Manalang shares his blessings by inspiring the young people of Bulacan to develop their talents to its full potentials. Yearly, he would sponsor basic school supplies for the indigent children of Lolomboy and employ out-of-school youth and unemployed mothers in his company to learn the dying tradition of metal working and ecclesiastical embroidery.

At a young age, Noli knew what he wanted to be, and that is to be into anything creative. He has spent long hours just drawing and sketching in his notebooks and whatever paper he can find. Watching the Holy Week procession and looking at the magnificent artworks inside the different churches that he visited, the images etched a vision in his head to come up with awe-inspiring artworks that are inspired by the sacred and holy images of the church. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs focusing on garments, it was a surprise to his family that he wanted to pursue art. His family is known in the community as employer of underprivileged mothers and this led him to develop a strong bond and empathy with the less fortunate ones. He promised himself to continue the legacy of his family to help the needy when he can already afford to be of help.

Propelled by the desire to help others and to push his creativity to the limits, Noli Manalang has married these two visions by perfecting his art and eventually creating a company that will help the least of our brethren. It was a full circle for Noli to finally be of service to his fellowmen while at the same time soar the artistic challenges of his chosen career.

To say that Noli Manalang is outstanding in his field is an understatement. Academically trained as an Architect from the University of Sto Tomas, he left the calling of designing wonderful edifices and buildings and pursued a career in the visual arts. A recipient of the 2004 Freeman Fellowship Grant of Vermont Studio Center in Vermont USA, Noli Manalang is one of the most decorated and most awarded artist of his generation. The Phillippine Centennial Painting Competition, Shell National Students Art Competition, Philip Morris Art Award, Art Association of the Philippines, Metrobank Art and Design Excellence, GSIS Painting Competition, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Painting Competition are just some of the competitions that accorded Noli Manalang top honors.

The youngest artist to be elevated as hall of famer in Kulay sa Tubig (an invitational watercolour competition sponsored by Gallery Genesis), he is also recognized by the province of Bulacan as Gintong Kabataan Awardee for his contributions and achievements in the field of visual arts in 2006.

With more than 30 solo and group exhibitions, Noli Manalang’s works have been showcased in international exhibition halls in New York and Vermont USA. His artworks were also auctioned off in Hong Kong by the United Asian Auctioneers and by the LARASATI Auctioneers in Singapore.

Aside from visual art, Noli Manalang bagged the Grand Prize in the 6th HIYAS Jewelry Design Competition, the Philippines’ premier jewelry design competition sponsored by the Guild of Philippine Jewellers in 2016.

Manalang is also a partner of a small emerging ecclesiastical atelier named Tecnica y Joyeria Artesenales, a creative workshop that produces the sought-after religious vestments and ecclesiastical crowns in the Philippines today. This small backyard workshop employs out-of-school youths who are trained in the artisanal techniques of embroidery and metalworking. The workshop has produced vestments and crowns that were worn by famous venerated holy images in the Philippines. The not-for-profit company envisions reviving the dying tradition of metalworking and embroidery for ecclesiastical vestments and crown making.

Noli Manalang’s profound body of works speak not only of the contemporary sentiments of the Filipinos but mirror the diverse cultural influences of the nation presented in an arresting visual form. As a country that has been colonized by Spain for more than 300 years, religious nuances are usually evident in his ouvre, but these images of religious influences are juxtaposed with the current plight of the people. The theme of redemption in the face of social unrest and poverty echo the cries of many Filipino today and he breathes life to the seemingly forlorn predicament of common people by his masterful strokes of the brush. His superlative attention to details, acute sense of color combination and hyper-realist rendition of his subjects can make every Filipino feel different emotions he would like to convey in his art. His works entice intellectual discussion and dialogue with other onlookers and within oneself, thus triggering self-reflection and introspection. He put the Philippines in the map of the visual art world and made every Filipino proud of their heritage. His recent art work (Child Jesus of Prague) in one of the palaces in Prague Czech Republic is a testament of the degree of respect the international art scene accords to Noli Manalang and the Filipino artistry as a whole. Together with his contemporaries, he amalgamated the Philippines’ claim as a strong force in the contemporary visual art world. Every Filipino can take pride in his work and the Philippines definitely benefits from the achievement he has reaped in his prolific career.
