PRISMATIC: A Prudencio Lamarroza Solo Exhibit

Exhibit Period | April 14 to April 30, 2021

Gallery Genesis proudly presents Prismatic, a solo show by Prudencio Lamarroza, a visual polymath working with painting, collage, and photography. Lamarroza’s practice has morphed over his six-decade-long career as an artist, and this exhibition hones in on vintage paintings that he made in the 1980’s.

A resident artist of Gallery Genesis from 1981 to the early 90’s, Lamarozza created paintings that assemble images and bold swathes of paint that tread the line between figurative images and vibrant abstractions, distinctly capturing the sensibilities of the era. His approach to images can be likened to that of surrealist artists such as Magritte, in which the images exist within their own dreamlike logic that the viewer can only hint at. However, Lamarroza’s vernacular is distinctly Filipino, encompassing historical events, tropicalia, and the pastoral. His paintings likewise reflect this certain approach to the image as canvas itself, featuring repeating motifs in the Amburayan series and the Stones series, which are prominent themes in his body of work.

The 80’s were a prolific decade that exemplifies why Lamarroza has been adorned with an array of prestigious laurels. He has been bestowed with awards and titles such as the Patnubay Kalinangan Award for Painting, Sikat Books’ Thirteen Painters for the 21st Century, and multiple wins at the Shell Annual. He has represented the Philippines in the 1969 Tokyo Biennal, the 1985 Baghdad International Festival of Arts, the 4th ASEAN Convention Exhibit of Paintings, and the RP-US Business Development Council Art Exhibition. Previous solo shows of his have been mounted at Gallery Genesis, The National Museum of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Gallery, Ayala Museum, the Lopez Museum, and Jose F. Sionil’s Solidaridad Gallery, to name a few.

Certainly, Lamarroza’s mastery over conducting shape, depth, and distance with an intuitive decisiveness and mystical sensibility demonstrates why Genesis has championed him for decades. From the 80’s to the present day, these glimpses into fantastic worlds beyond imagination continue to captivate viewers. With over 30 vintage artworks, Prismatic is a celebration of Prudencio Lamarroza’s greatest era. Exhibition Period is from April 14 to 30, 2021.

Lamarroza’s “Untitled” reflects a single woman in a multitude of facets. Even if the subject of each portrait is the same woman, the minute variations and shifts in expression and perspective speak to the true complexities of how an individual really is, which often eludes articulation.

Amor is a rare work in Lamarroza’s oeuvre that bridges his abstraction with traditional portraiture. In this circular window, a nude woman gazes off frame, deep in a reverie, as her hair is swept away by the wind. A pattern echoes across the canvas drawing these two contrasting styles together.
